Mindfulness based therapy
One does not become enlightened by imagining figures of light, but by making the darkness conscious.
– C G. Jung

What is Mindfulness?
Mindfulness is present moment awareness. When we practice mindfulness, we are observant. We observe our sensations and notice the colours, fragrances, images, subtle sounds and textures all around and within us. Not only do we notice our physical sensations, but we are also aware of our actions, thoughts and emotions. We become the investigator of the nuances of ourselves.
Why is mindfulness important?
Most of us today live a busy and stressed life. Our mind is very rarely in the present moment. Our mind tends to either be consumed by the rehashing of past events or planning and worrying about future events. Very seldom do we take a deep breath, pause and pay attention to what is happening in our body and mind in the present. In this way, we lose connection with ourselves. And this loss of connection has far reaching effects. It effects our physical and mental health. We miss the signals that our body is giving to us. And over a prolonged period of time, intense anxiety and stress can lead to illness. By not paying attention, we can also override the voice within that may say, “slow down – I’m not happy, I need more time for myself.” And when we are not listening to this inner voice, a break down in communication occurs. We may begin to feel more separate, lonely and out of touch with our needs. Overeating, drinking, compulsive behaviours, and depression may result. We may also make hasty decisions that are not in alignment with who we really are which may have consequences that could have been avoided if we were more present to ourselves.
Mindfulness in therapy
My therapy approach is client-centered with an emphasis on building awareness of oneself. The process involves discussing and unpacking your story, your needs, your thoughts and the intentions you have for yourself. In each session, we will look closely at the areas in your life that need more awareness. Depending on your specific needs, I may guide you in a mindfulness meditation where you:
- – relax, breathe and notice the sensations in your body and around you – cultivating a calm, observant state of mind.
- – review the day, week, month or even the past few years in this highly observant state – noticing patterns of behaviour, thoughts and emotions.
By quietening the mind and building awareness, you reestablish connection between your body and your mind. And this brings you into a greater sense of balance, clarity and connection with yourself. When we are fully aware of ourselves, this knowledge puts us in a position of power. From this calm, insightful space, we can then choose to accept those things that can’t be changed and change those thoughts, feelings and actions that need to be released.
